Cement based renders generally need a 3 coat paint system unless you leave it natural. Leaving it natural has its own problems as it is prone dirt pickup and can make it look tired before it's time due to the natural elements. Another noticeable characteristic of leaving it natural is a detectable brick joint through the render which can look unsightly.
The most common practice of today is to use an acrylic render/texture. It has excellent long lasting durability particularly near the coast as it is tough yet flexible and it comes in most colours and has an ultra flat look.
